US SENDS BOMBER JET TO NORTH KOREA AS ANOTHER WORLD WAR LOOMS

Two US Air Force bombers flew over the Korean Peninsula during a 10-hour mission Saturday in response to North Korea’s recent intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launches, US Pacific Air Forces said.

The mission came a day after North Korea test-fired its second ICBM, with experts saying Pyongyang now has the ability to hit major US cities. The B-1B bombers joined with fighter jets from Japan and South Korea for the mission, the Pacific Air Forces said in a statement.

The action was a “direct response” to North Korea’s ICBM launches on Friday and on July 3, the statement said.

“Diplomacy remains the lead; however, we have a responsibility to our allies and our nation to showcase our unwavering commitment while planning for the worst-case scenario,” Pacific Air Forces commander Terrence O’Shaughnessy said in the statement.
“If called upon, we are ready to respond with rapid, lethal, and overwhelming force at a time and place of our choosing,” O’Shaughnessy said. He said North Korea “remains the most urgent threat to regional stability.”
The US planes took off from Guam and flew to the Korean Peninsula via Japanese airspace, the statement said, and crews practised intercept and formation training during the mission.

Also on Saturday, US President Donald Trump took to Twitter to criticize China for not doing enough to intervene with North Korea.

“I am very disappointed in China,” Trump tweeted from his personal account. “Our foolish past leaders have allowed them to make hundreds of billions of dollars a year in trade, yet they do NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk.”

“We will no longer allow this to continue,” Trump said. “China could easily solve this problem!”

Trump on Friday said the ICBM launch was“only the latest reckless and dangerous action by the North Korean regime.”
US bombers took part in another drill with Japanese and South Korean fighter jets earlier this month in response to the “growing threat from North Korea’s ballistic missile and nuclear programmes,” the US Air Force said then.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been ratcheted up since the start of last year, with North Korea testing two nuclear bombs and test-firing a series of missiles.

North Korea carried out its first successful ICBM test in early July. Friday’s missile reportedly flew 900 kilometres higher than the first.

"DONT LET YOUR BABIES FALL ASLEEP ON YOUR CHEST" DOCTORS SEND STRONG WARNING TO PARENTS

A doctor has put out a warning to parents who let their baby sleep on their chest after tragically losing his own son.

Dr Sam Hanke has taken up the cause after noticing a trend of famous dads posting images of themselves with their infant children perched soundly asleep on their chest.

Despite being a cute image, Dr Hanke knows only too well how dangerous it can be.

In 2010 he was lying on the sofa while his baby son Charlie slept on his chest. A few minutes later Dr Hanke himself fell asleep, only to wake up to every parent’s worst nightmare.
‘A couple hours later I woke up and Charlie was gone,’ he told Fatherly.com.

Charlie’s death from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has spurred Dr Hanke and his wife to launch Charlie’s Kids, a foundation which aims to educate parents on the safest way to let their baby sleep.

The foundation points out that many babies die every year due to sleeping with their parents – usually because the baby falls off the parent’s chest or because the sleeping adult rolls over and suffocates the baby.

Aside from celebrities hoping for a good Instagram picture, many mothers comment that at times the only way to get a baby to sleep is by holding him or her to your chest.

However Charlie’s Kids urges parents to always put babies to sleep in crib, whether they are napping or going to bed, and tells parents not to‘sleep with your baby on a shared sleep service’.
Here is a list of dos and don’ts safe sleeping for babies from Charlie’s Kids:

Earlier on Wednesday, members of the Nigerian Senate, passed a bill which proposed 35-years as the minimum age for the office of the president from the initial 40-years mandated by the 1999 constitution.

The lawmakers also moved a motion to encourage Nigerian youths to contest for the post of Governor or Senator at the age of 30, away from the initial 35years limit mandated by the 1999 constitution.

While commenting on the new bill titled "Not Too Young To Run", the lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Senator Shehu Sani, on explained why the Upper Legislative Chamber passed the bill.

Sani, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign debts, said the Senate passed the bill so that young Nigerians can contest for elective positions.

GOODNEWS: THE UNIVERSAL CURE FOR HIV AND CANCER CURRENTLY UNDERWAY..SEE DETAIL

A Nobel Laureate, Prof. Francoise Barre-Sinoussi, says efforts are ongoing to develop a universal cure for HIV and cancer through collaboration.

Barre-Sinoussi, a co-discoverer of the HIV,  said this in Paris while conducting some select journalists on a  tour of the sophisticated laboratories at Institut Pasteur.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier co-discovered the HIV in 1983.

She also stated that the HIV Cure and Cancer Forum would on Saturday be inaugurated at the Institut Curie in Paris.

“Efforts are now underway to determine if these cancer therapies can be used to build up the immune system of patients with HIV.
“This will be in such a way that HIV patients can achieve a durable and perhaps life-long treatment–free state of remission,’’ she said.

The former IAS President said that many of the key immune pathways now being therapeutically manipulated to cure cancer were first discovered in studies of chronic viral infections, particularly HIV.
“We know that controlling HIV in the absence of therapy will require the generation and maintenance of powerful CD8+ or Killer-T cells that can target vulnerable parts of the virus.
“The challenge is remarkably similar to that in oncology where the goal of innovative therapies is to generate Killer T cells that recognise and clear cancer cells.
“Timothy Brown is the only person cured of HIV, and this was due to the work of a highly resourceful team of  Oncologists.
“His case illustrates that we need to do more to incentivise scientists to work across diseases and to ensure that research funding allows these synergies,’’  she said.

The Emeritus Director of Research at Inserm expressed optimism that synergy would continue to strengthen the sciences and research.

IAS President,  Prof. Linda-Gail Bekker, on her part, said that continued support for research was essential.

She said the gathering in  Paris would be used to inform the global community that research cuts would reverse the progress made against HIV and put more lives at risk.

NAN reports that among those who led the IAS team round the laboratories were Prof. Olivier Schwartz, Head of Virus and Immunity Unit and Dr Asier Saez-Cirion, the Team Leader, HIV and Inflammation Unit.

Also on the IAS team were Prof. Jean-Francois Delfraissy,  Dr Jean-Francois Chambon and Prof. Francois Dabis.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL VISA INTERVIEW, NO 10. IS VERY IMPORTANT

1) TIES TO HOME COUNTRY
Under US law, all applicants for nonimmigrant visas are viewed as intending immigrants until they can convince the consular officer that they are not. You must therefore be able to show that you have reasons for returning to your home country that are stronger than those for remaining in the United States.

"Ties" to your home country are the things that bind you to your hometown, homeland, or current place of residence (i.e., job, family, financial prospects that you own or will inherit, investments, etc).

If you are a prospective student, the interviewing officer may ask about your specific intentions or promise of future employment, family or other relationships, educational objectives, grades, long-long range plans, and career prospects in your home country. Each person's situation is different, of course, and there is no magic explanation or single document, certificate, or letter, which can guarantee visa issuance.
2) ENGLISHAnticipate that the interview will be conducted in English and not in your native language. One suggestion is to practice English conversation with a native speaker before the interview. If you are coming to the United States solely to study intensive English, be prepared to explain how English will be useful for you in your home country.

3) SPEAK FOR YOURSELFDo not bring parents or family members with you to your interview. The consular officer wants to interview you, not your family. A negative impression is created if you are not prepared to speak on your own behalf. If you are a minor applying for a high school program and need your parents there in case there are questions, for example, about funding, they should wait in the waiting room.

4) KNOW THE PROGRAM AND HOW IT FITS YOUR CAREER PLANSIf you are not able to articulate the reasons you will study in a particular program in the United States, you may not succeed in convincing the consular officer that you are indeed planning to study, rather than to immigrate. You should also be able to explain how studying in the United States relates to your future professional career in your home country.
5) BE CONCISEBecause of the volume of applications that are received, all consular officers are under considerable time pressure to conduct a quick and efficient interview. They must make a decision, for the most part, on the impressions they form during the first minute or two of the interview. Consequently, what you say first and the initial impression you create are critical to your success. Keep your answers to the officer's questions short and to the point.

6) SUPPLEMENTAL DOCUMENTATIONIt should be clear at a glance to the consular officer what written documents you are presenting and what they signify. Lengthy written explanations cannot be quickly read or evaluated. Remember that you will have 2-3 minutes of interview time, if you're lucky.

7) NOT ALL COUNTRIES ARE EQUALApplicants from countries suffering economic problems or from countries where many students have remained in the United States as immigrants will have more difficulty getting visas. Statistically, applicants from those countries are more likely to be asked about job opportunities at home after their study in the United States.

8) EMPLOYMENTYour main purpose of coming to the United States should be to study, not for the chance to work before or after graduation. While many students do work off-campus during their studies, such employment is incidental to their main purpose of completing their US education.

You must be able to clearly articulate your plan to return home at the end of your program. If your spouse is also applying for an accompanying F-2 visa, be aware that F-2 dependents cannot, under any circumstances, be employed in the United States. If asked, be prepared to address what your spouse intends to do with his or her time while in the United States. Volunteer work and attending school part-time are permitted activities.

9) DEPENDENTS REMAINING AT HOMEIf your spouse and children are remaining behind in your country, be prepared to address how they will support themselves in your absence. This can be an especially tricky area if you are the primary source of income for your family. If the consular officer gains the impression that your family members will need you to remit money from the United States in order to support themselves, your student visa application will almost certainly be denied. If your family does decide to join you at a later time, it is helpful to have them apply at the same post where you applied for your visa.

10) MAINTAIN A POSITIVE ATTITUDEDo not engage the consular officer in an argument. If you are denied a student visa, ask the officer for a list of documents he or she would suggest you bring in order to overcome the refusal, and try to get the reason you were denied in writing.

HAVING S*X ONCE A WEEK COULD HELP WOMEN LIVE LONGER - NEW STUDY REVEALS

Well, if women had a scientific reason for having s*x frequently, here it is: According to a new research, having s*x at least once a week could slow down the ageing process. Hooray!

A study published in peer reviewed journal,Psychoneuroendocrinology, in March found that women who have regular s*x have longer telomeres – the caps on chromosomes that protect the integrity of the DNA.

That’s a good thing. As you age, your telomeres shorten, and the shorter they are, the more likely you are to develop a degenerative disease and die prematurely.

The study analysed 129 women, and found that those who had sex at least once a week were likely to have longer telomeres.

Longer telomeres could point to longer life, a slowing down of the ageing process, and a reduced risk of degenerative disease. Which all sounds splendid.

But before you get too excited, it’s important to note that the study was pretty small, and that there could be a whole host of other factors coming into play.

Researchers only gathered data on 129 mothers in committed relationships, so there’s currently no evidence of the ‘sex = longer life’ connection for single women having regular sex or women who haven’t had children.

The researchers note that the findings are ‘largely exploratory,’ and state that they can only generalise them to partnered mothers in long-term relationships.

It’s also possible that there’s a ‘self-selection bias’, meaning healthy women with longer telomere length may be more likely to have regular sex, rather than the opposite cause-and-effect relationship.

Basically, a lot more research needs to be done before we can sack medical treatment and bang our way to better health.
But in the meantime, having sex won’t do much harm. Go for it, if you fancy it.

This relationship held up even when the researchers took other factors into account, such as stress and the quality of a relationship, which suggests that there’s a strong connection between an active sex life and longer telomeres.

198 NIGERIANS HAVE BEEN DEPORTED FROM SAUDI ARABIA (DETAILS)

The Federal Government on Saturday received no fewer than 198 Nigerians illegally residing in Saudi Arabia at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport at about 10 am.

This number was out of the 1,800 Nigerians living illegally in Saudi Arabia, who were given amnesty to return to the country.

The 198 persons including women and children returned with their luggage on board a Med-View aircraft.

Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Kano received the first batch of the returnees.

Mohammed Yahaya-Sani, the Consular at the Nigerian Consulate in Jedda, Saudi Arabia, who led the illegal immigrants to Nigeria, told newsmen at the airport that the Federal Government sponsored their return.

According to him, the illegal migrants voluntarily reported to the Nigerian Embassy to be returned to Nigeria in compliance with the three months evacuation notice issued to them by Saudi authorities, which will expire on July 24.

Yahaya-Sani said that contrary to speculations, the returnees were not deported rather they voluntarily accepted the amnesty offer granted them by the Saudi authorities for illegal immigrants to leave the country.

“They decided on their own to return to Nigeria. The Saudi authorities offered amnesty to all illegal immigrants to leave the country within three months,” he said.

The official handed over the returnees to NEMA officials at the airport who witnessed and documented their returns before they later departed to their various towns and villages.

CHECK OUT THIS 81-YEAR OLD HISTORICAL TOWER THAT GIVES THE ANCIENT CITY OF IBADAN AN AERIAL VIEW

The popular Bower's Tower

Maiden online TV company - Hello Oduduwa founded  in June, 2017 by ace Nigerian photographer, Ginikah Okafor Emmanuel to cover the rich history and monumental structures of the Yorubas has covered a historical and pre-colonial structure in the ancient city of Ibadan, Oyo State regarded as the Bower's Tower.

The structure which is one of its kind was commissioned in 1936 in honour of the first British resident in Ibadan and the traveling commissioner of the Yorubaland, south- western region of Nigeria, between 1893 and 1879 - Captain Robert Lister Bower.

Mr Bower is fondly regarded as the 'Ajele' of Ibadan due to his contribution to the development of the ancient city.

The Bower’s Tower, located at the peak of Oke- Are, the highest hill in Ibadan, is one of the historical monuments that Ibadan could be proud of. It is 60 feet high and 11 feet with two entrances and a long spiral stairs. From the top of the monument, the altitude of Ibadan would be seen as a vast sheet of brown roofs.

The building was nicknamed ‘Layipo’ because of its long spiral staircase which some claim to make them dizzy after climbing. It served as one of the most visited tourist center in the city of Ibadan.
The memorial tower symbolizes a plethora of meanings. On one hand, it is perceived that the peoples reflection of the footprints of Bower in the annals of their history necessitated the erection of that historic monument as a memorial of his relatively peaceful era, socio-economic development as well as his general administrative acumen in the course of his service among them which remain indelible.
As a rider to this, the monument serves as a reminder to the Ibadan people in particular and the Yoruba in general, of the man who firmly established the loyalty of their forebears to the British imperial crown. (S. Ademola Ajayi, 2008.)
Mounting the tower gives one the cherished advantage of enjoying an aerial view of Ibadan and seeing the expansive area of land - a total area of 3,080 square kilometres.

According to the anchor of the short documentary named Wole Adejumo, climbing the long stairs helps one to sight the Lekan Salami Stadium, University College hospital, Broken House (Femi Johnson) at Dugbe as well as other buildings of interest.

NIGERIANS PRAISE SARAKI FOR INTERVENING TO SAVE LAUTECH.

Commendations have continued to trail the intervention of the President of the Senate in the ongoing strike by lecturers of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH).

The institution had been under lock for several months as lecturers protest non-payment of salaries, allowances and pensions even as the government of Osun and Oyo allege mismanagement of funds.

Lecturers in the institution under the Academic Staff Union of Universities insist the government owe them N8 billion in arrears.

In a bid to end the lingering crisis, the President of the Senate met with students of the institution to discuss the possibility of resolving the problem at the shortest possible time.

In the meeting which was aired live on the facebook page of the President of the Senate, Saraki promised to get to the bottom of the matter and ensure the school resumes academic activities.

The meeting and promised intervention of Saraki has generated wide commendation on facebook by some Nigerians who watched the video.

While some praised Saraki for his intervention, others said that his intervention had won them over from being critics of the senator to being his supporters.

However, some others were of the opinion that his intervention was merely to score political points while other questions his sincerity of purpose.

MAN RELEASES NAKED PHOTOS OF HIS GIRLFRIEND TO A WHATSAPP GROUP AFTER FINDING OUT THAT SHE'S CHEATING ON HIM

Munashe Herbert Runganga, a Zimbabwean man who got angry after being jilted, has posted nude photographs of his live-in lover on a WhatsApp group with more than 300 people after discovering photos of different men in her mobile phone.

According to H-Metro, Munashe Herbert Runganga posted n*de photographs of Ratidzo Masenda showing her private parts on a Whatsapp group, accusing her of dating several men while he was serving a jail term.

Runganga confirmed sending the photographs, saying Ratidzo had been abusing him s*xually to the extent of having unprotected s*x without being tested for HIV and starving his children.
“I’m the one who posted n*de photographs of Ratidzo, she is so cruel that she ruined my life and family by making sure I got arrested before starving my children” said Runganga.
“She admired me while I was a vendor at XIMEX mall and seduced me and we ended up having unprotected s*x without getting tested following the death of her husband”
“She would not allow me to talk to other ladies, even save a female contact in my mobile phone”
“She would harass my female clients to the point that I ended up joining her in selling clothes at Avondale Flea Market. Having s*x was what she was after and whenever I asked her to excuse me to see my children, she would get me arrested, accusing me of stealing kitchen utensils like knives”
“I used to walk with a knife for protection since I was used to go to Chitungwiza where we worked late and feared for robbers”
“I served a six month jail sentence after she got me arrested and she would visit me with affidavits asking me to sign papers indicating that I am married to her, when in the actual fact we were only lovers”
“She threatened me with further accusations leading to arrest if I did not comply with her demand to marry her”
“I discovered photos of different men in her mobile phone and this proves that she was dating all these men while I was in prison and I felt betrayed and saw it fit to post her nude photographs.
“She has been bedding different young men and after confronting her about this, she claims they were doing business” said Runganga

Ratidzo confirmed her differences with Runganga, saying she had lodged a complaint with the police against Runganga for posting her n*de photographs on a WhatsApp group.
“I have reported the matter to the police and whoever is going to keep posting my nude photographs I will sue them” said Ratidzo.
“My lawyers are now handling the case, Runganga is my husband and who knows, maybe he forced me to pose for the photographs at knife point or at my own will”
“I stand to be advised by my lawyers but what I can tell you for now is I’m seeking guidance from the lawyer and he advised me not to comment before I give him full details of the story”
“I will call you later since I have your contact number, please do not publish this” said Ratidzo.

For as long as you are awake, you shall breathe. But should you ever fall into sleep, that breath will desert you.” Totally normal stuff for a folk tale, but a similar curse actually exists in real life.

Ondine’s Curse is a very rare condition. It is estimated that only 1,500 people around the world suffer from it, but Liam’s case is one of the most extreme. Milder versions of the condition prevent sufferers from getting a good, repairing sleep, but in the 18-year-old’s case, falling asleep can literally kill him.

CELEBRATION AS PRESIDENT RETURNS AFTER MEDICAL VACATION

The Angolan President, Mr. José Eduardo dos Santos, has returned home after 17 days in Spain where he normally travels for medical treatment and holiday.

President dos Santos, 74, arrived in Luanda late Wednesday, accompanied by the First Lady, Ana Paula dos Santos. They were received at the Luanda military air base by Vice-President Manuel Domingos Vicente and other top government officials.

The veteran leader has visited the European state several times since 2013, Africa Review said. President dos Santos left Angola on July 3 for Barcelona, with his office alluding in a statement that the visit was private, without divulging details.

He spent 28 days in Spain in May without an official explanation, prompting claims of his death on both the social and traditional media.
“He is in Spain and when he gets fine he will be back home” Foreign Affairs minister Georges Chikoti told journalists in Luanda on May 29.
It was the first time a top government official confirmed that President dos Santos usually went to Spain for medical treatment.
“President dos Santos normally seeks medical treatment in Spain and this is normal for him to be there,” he said.
“It is all right but you know it happens with everyone. Sometimes you don’t fill fine but he is fine.”
President dos Santos has been in power since in 1979 and is Africa’s second longest serving president after Obiang’ Nguema of Equatorial Guinea.

The southern Africa state goes to the polls on August 23 that will see the long-serving leader retire.

The ruling party, MPLA, has nominated Defence minister João Lourenço as its flag bearer for the August presidential contest.

Opposition has been calling on the government to reveal the state of the President health amid reports that Africa’s second-longest ruler is seriously ill. Dos Santos, who has run the oil-producing southern African nation since 1979, first left Angola at the start of May on what was officially billed as a two-week “private visit”.
His daughter, Isabel, took to Instagram to knock down “fake news”, that her father was probably dead.
“Someone has gone so low as to invent information about the death of a man in order to create confusion and turmoil in Angolan politics,” Isabel dos Santos, who is also head of state oil firm Sonangol, said.

Raul Danda, parliamentary president of the opposition UNITA party, said the lack of clarity about the health of the man who has been central to Angola’s stability since the end of a long civil war in 2002 was becoming a national security issue.

Dos Santos, a Soviet-trained oil engineer and veteran of the guerrilla war against Portuguese rule, rarely appears in public but the last time Danda saw him, he did not look well, he said.

OSUN PENSIONERS STAGE FRESH PROTEST AS AREGBESOLA RECEIVES $6.314bn REFUND

According to a Punch Metro report, pensioners in Osun State under the aegis of Forum of 2011/2012 Pensioners on Wednesday staged a fresh protest to demand payment of the arrears of their pensions and gratuities.
This fresh protest came just a day after Governor Rauf Aregbesola confirmed that he had received N6.314bn as the second tranche of the Paris Club loan refund.
The Chairman of the forum, Mr Omoniyi Ilesanmi, who led the protest said the governor should use the money to pay the entitlements of pensioners.
He said the pensioners were being owed one-year full pension arrears and gratuities from 2008 to 2012.
The pensioners stormed the State Civil Service Secretariat at Abere and blocked part of the road but they allowed workers and others to go in and out of the place.
Armed with placards with various inscriptions the retired workers sang anti-government songs and rained abuses on the governor.
Armed policemen and other security agents deployed to monitor the protest were civil in their approach as they allowed the protesters to show their grievances without resorting to violence
The pensioners said no fewer than 2000 of their colleagues had died due to lack of money to buy food and to treat themselves.
Ilesanmi vowed that the pensioners would make the state ungovernable for the governor except he paid their entitlements.
Ilesanmi said, ” The governor should use the N6.314bn he just collected to pay us. He should look for money from anywhere to pay us all our entitlements."

The General Overseer of the Omega Fire Ministry, Apostle Johnson Suleiman has admonished Nigerians to apply caution and stop wishing for President Muhammadu Buhari's death.
According to him, it belongs to God to determine who lives or dies. The man of God further urged Nigerians to pray for the well-being of the ailing president.
“Only an irresponsible country will be wishing their leader dead.
“It’s an irresponsible thing for people to be wishing President’s death. Nobody who has a good heart will be wishing a leader dead.
“You don’t wish your leader dead. Nigerians should be careful. Only God has the power of life and death.

“And you are wishing him dead. I know this thing I’m saying some Christians won’t like it. Stop wishing him dead. Pray for his health. Don’t wish any leader dead.
“Only an irresponsible country will be wishing their leader dead.” he established.
Suleiman also urged everyone to live in peace instead of allowing crisis to prevail in the various regions of the country.

A total of 1008 candidates have been shortlisted to face a Central Selection Committee panel constituted from the academia, industry and research institutes. The memberswill interview the shortlisted candidates on their PhD. research proposals in the 9 priority areas for the award of the Ph.D. scholarship.
These are Environmental Studies and HSE (Health Safety and Environment),Marginal fields development, Flow Assurance and Pipelines Engineering, Geology, and Petroleum Geology, Civil and Marine Engineering, Renewable Energy, Reservoir Engineering/Production Technology, Refining Technology, Ship Building and Marine Technology, and other relevant oil and gas related disciplines.
Shortlisted candidates for the interview are being contacted through email and SMS notifications giving the specific dates and times for their interviews. Applicants are also advised to visit the application website using their PIN. Successful candidates will be able to log on to the site and print their notification slip which will contain necessary information and instructions. The PTDF PhD. Scholarship is for a duration of thirty six (36) months.
The Aptitude Test for the selection of candidates for the award of 2017/2018 PTDF Scholarship in the MSc category took place earlier this month in six centers located in the geopolitical zones of thecountry.
The Executive Sectary, Petroleum Technology Development Fund, Dr. Bello Aliyu Gusau monitored the exercise in the Abuja and Kaduna centers where he gave an insight on the selection criteria for the award of PTDF scholarship.
“What we do essentially is to ensure that based on our own skills gap analysis, we understand where we do have deficit in the oil and gas sector. And we concentrate on those areas of deficit. As the sector is growing, new demands for skills are also growing, so we keep tracking and monitoring that and we tailor our capacity building programme to meet these demands”.
The Executive Secretary also commented on other issues affecting the scholarship schemes of the Fund in an interview. Read below;
PTDF has been involved in this scheme for quite a while now, would you say that, the objective of the Overseas Scholarship Scheme has been achieved?
"To a large extent yes, it has been achieved in the sense that, it was designed as a stop gap measure to build capacity for us to do most of the training that we require in-country. A large number of the beneficiaries especially at the higher level of PhD are university lecturers, so we see it as some kind of train the trainer programme whereby we build capacity for people who will come home and also continue with the process of building capacity. We have done that for the last few years and the numbers that have benefited are quite large. We believe that, we have reached a point of comfort. In as much as we are not going to jettison the Overseas Scholarship Scheme, but the traffic will have to change going forward. We are going to focus more and more attention on Nigerian universities.
Talking about the successes achieved so far, would you say that the beneficiaries of the scheme in the past years are impacting the oil and gas industry?
"They are doing very well in the sense that, quite a large number of them are working in the industry someeven before they availed themselves of this opportunity to go and further their education. In addition like I said earlier, quite a large number of them are also in the universities. So you can see that, the departments that are oil and gas related in the universities are adequately staffed and I can tell you that, majority of the staff in such departments were beneficiaries of the Overseas Scholarship Scheme.
Talking about in-country training, what steps have you taken to ensure the successful implementation of that dream and is that going to be reflected in this year’s award?

"We made it clear in the advert that, the people that are sitting for this year’s aptitude test are both for Overseas Scholarship Scheme and Local Scholarship Scheme. So depending on the programme, in such areas where our universities are deficientin facilities and faculty, then we will have to continue relying on foreign universities, but in areas where our own universities do have the necessary courses and programmes, we will increasingly re-direct the traffic to our own universities.
"We recently had ameeting with Vice Chancellors of Federal universities, to ensure that, some of the hitches that are normally associated with post graduate programmes in Nigerian universities are addressed. That is what we are doing.

There seems to be an innovation. We are seeing representation from the Federal Character institution in monitoring the aptitude test in all the centers. What is the rationale behind the involvement of the Federal Character Commission in this year’s exam?
"It is a requirement for any public agency that is doing something involving the public to convince the Federal CharacterCommission thatthe States of the country are represented. That is what the FCC is doing here, and they are represented at a very high level in all the centers. You can see the commissioner is here himself, the same thing in Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Bauchi and Enugu, so it’s a requirement of the law that public agencies must tailor or design their programmes to impact on all sections of the country and that is what we are doing."
Engineer Ahmed Isaac, the Commissioner representing North West at the Federal Character Commission also justified the presence of the commission in this Interview.

Let’sknow why you are here in Kaduna?
"Officially I am here to monitor the examination from the very beginning of it to its conclusion. So far so good, as far as we are concerned the exercise has been well organized and the conduct of same is quite commendable. At the end of it the overall exercise would be adjudged as compliant with federal character extant rules and regulation and once that is achieved and I believe it will, going by what I have been observing, a certificate of compliance will be issued to PTDF."
How do you adjudge the exercise as federal character compliant?
"By the register, because we insisted that all the candidates must indicate their names, their state of origin, so going by what we have observed, all the states are fairly represented, so that is why I am saying its federal character compliant."

HOW A QUACK MEDICAL PRACTITIONER INFECTED A 6-YEAR OLD BOY WITH HIV IN NASSARAWA STATE

Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly operating an illegal clinic and infecting a six-year-old boy with HIV through transfusion of unscreened blood.
The state Commandant of NSCDC, Mr Lawan Bashir-Kano, told newsmen on Wednesday in Lafia that the suspect, Jonathan Ibrahim, was arrested on July 17.
He said that Ibrahim, who hails from Iwashi village in Doma Local Government Area of the state, was arrested following a complaint about his activities from members of the public.
Bashir-Kano said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, who operates an unregistered clinic, last year, transfused contaminated blood to the six-year-old boy, thereby infecting him with HIV.
He said the parents of the boy recently discovered that he had been infected with the virus.
He added that tests were carried out on the lad in Lafia following frequent illness showed that he was HIV positive.
The commandant said the suspect had confessed to running an illegal clinic and transfused unscreened blood to the patient in question at his facility last year.
Bashir-Kano said the command, in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health, as well as the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria in the state would ensure that the suspect was prosecuted.

“If such persons are not made to face the wrath of the law, there would be increased cases of untimely death occasioned by fake medical treatment,” he said.
The commandant called on members of the public to be vigilant and wary of fake medical practitioners.
He added that they should report any suspicious medical personnel or outfit to security agencies for action.
The suspect who told newsmen he graduated from the School of Health Technology, Keffi as an environmental health officer, confessed that he had no license to operate the clinic.

UNBELIEVABLE: 19 YEAR OLD BOY CAUGHT MANUFACTURING GUNS IN PLATEAU

Eric Labari, a 19-year-old gun manufacturer, has been arrested by Operation Safe Haven military task force in charge of security in Plateau and Southern Kaduna, NAN reports.

The Commander of the task force, Maj. Gen. Nicholas Rojas, made the disclosure when he briefed newsmen in Jos on Wednesday.
He said that Labari was arrested when OPSH personnel apprehended one of his customers, Bensahak Nandom.
He said that Nandom was caught on his way to Jos from Mangu where he was going to resell the gun he bought from Labari.
“Somebody was arrested with a pistol and some ammunition and after investigation, he said that he bought it from somebody.

“He led us to the person he bought it from, he led us to the young man who has a warehouse where he fabricates different brands of weapons.

“He has his fabricating machine, his cutters, shapers and so many other things used in fabrication,” Rojas explained.
Labari, who was allowed to speak to newsmen, said that he dropped out of Government Technical College, Bukuru near Jos, when his parents could no longer afford his school fees.
He said that he went into the business without the knowledge of his parents to raise some money.
The gun manufacturer said he designs and manufactures the guns single-handedly.
“I learn the manufacturing of arms from Government Technical College, Bukuru, and I have been in the business for about a year now.

“I manufactured the first single barrel with six shoot sprayers and sold it N11,000 to the person that was arrested and I also sold single barrel at the cost N3,500,” Labari said.
Nandom on his part said that he bought the gun to resell to somebody in Jos who needed it for protection.
The suspect said that he was caught on his way to deliver the gun.
The task force displayed different weapons and materials for fabrication recovered from Labari’s warehouse.
Meanwhile, the OPSH commander has warned that the task force would not condone any act of lawlessness from any group in the state.
Rojas gave the warning on the background of the face-off between members of the task force and motorcycle riders on Tuesday in Mangu Local Government.
He said that a soldier and policeman were injured while one of the riders was shot while trying to escape.
The commander said that some arrest have been made in connection with the incident and that investigation was still ongoing.
